As a dairy farmer, it’s been a stressful week. And yes, I know it’s only Tuesday.
The Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations are being held this week in Atlanta, GA. And there is talk that the Canadian dairy industry’s supply management system is “on the table” in some way, shape or form.
No matter what, though, the fact that it’s on the table AT ALL has the Canadian dairy industry very worried. If concessions go through, the industry as we know it – and as consumers have learned to trust in it for high quality, local, competitively priced milk products – would drastically change.
Dairy Farmers of Canada reached out to me and asked if I could write a blog post for their Farmers’ Voice blog about what supply management means to me and to my family. Well, it means a helluva lot, to say the least.
I wanted to share the post here so that you could all understand what kind of week it’s been for us here on the farm, as well as what these TPP negotiations could mean for an industry that is stable, secure and provides an incredibly high quality product to consumers, making it the envy of dairy industries the world over.
Give it a read and consider. And then pray for the Canadian dairy industry.
